About Mrs. Woods

Working with the parents the Reading Specialist:

  • Attends EMT meetings to help determine a student’s areas of growth and best course of action.

  • Provides training sessions on how to support reading or writing at home, and be an effective classroom volunteer for Writer’s Workshop times.

  • Acts as a resource for questions regarding reading progress, comprehension strategies, etc.

The Reading Specialist supports the entire school community to ensure students read with fluency and construct meaning about what they read both orally and in written form.  She provides services to the staff, students and parents.

Working with staff the Reading Specialist:

  • Assists teachers in planning, organizing, and conducting the reading/language arts program for each grade/class.

  • Recommends, selects and orders reading materials for all grade levels.

  • Participates on the Leadership Team to help determine the best path and decisions for the school.

  • Inform staff of new materials and trends in reading.

  • Serves as a resource to staff in identifying reading needs, adapting instructional techniques, and selecting appropriate materials to use with students.

  • Models instructional strategies in classrooms for teachers.

  • Orchestrates opportunities for professional growth through staff development sessions on a group or individual basis.

Working with students the Reading Specialist:

  • Works with small groups or individuals to target specific skills that need reinforcement or enrichment.

  • Oversees all reading interventions conducted by support staff to ensure continuity of the instruction and progress monitoring.

  • Interacts with students in the classroom and across the school setting in promoting reading for pleasure.

  • Assesses individual students when needed to determine areas of growth and the appropriate actions to take.

Mrs. Woods is excited to join the Westbrook team! This is her first year as a reading specialist. Mrs. Woods taught second grade at Somerset E.S. for seven years. Prior to coming to Somerset, she taught kindergarten at Bethesda E.S. for one year. She graduated from College of Charleston with a BS in Early Childhood Education and has also earned a MS in Education, specializing in Reading from Johns Hopkins University. Mrs. Woods is a certified reading specialist. She is currently working on her Administration and Supervision certificate at Johns Hopkins University. She is looking forward to a great year at Westbrook!
